MESSAGE, 2002
Video installation, 4' 00", 2 monitors, sound
The two-part video "Message" is shown in a darkened space. It places the receiver in two different reception situations. On the first monitor, an off-camera voice is heard, along with noises originating from a phone booth. The voice accompanies a series of images. Eventually, it expresses a desire to understand the concept of "home." Near the end, music is heard. It is not any music, but rather the voice's favorite record.
On the second monitor, only bits and pieces of a communication can be heard because it is distorted by strong static. The images – video feed from a surveillance camera – are marred by dropouts. The successive stream of images on the first monitor presents messages that are just about to take on form, while the second image level already contains a nascent partial invisibility and incomprehensibility.
